Everything to know before Tuesday.

How the troop runs, what happens on your first visit, how scouts are kept safe, and how a new scout works his way to Eagle. Read what you need, then come see it.

Why choose Troop 183?

A troop with a track record, close to home, that asks one weeknight of your family.

83 Eagle Scouts
Since 2004. Nationally, only a small share of scouts ever earn Eagle.
25 years running
Founded in March 2001, with the same chartered organization the whole way.
Run by the scouts
Scouts elect a new Senior Patrol Leader every six months. More than 40 have led the troop.
Summer camp every year
A week away every summer since 2001, plus campouts through the year.

How does a Scouts BSA troop work?

Troop 183 is a Scouts BSA troop for boys, usually ages 11 to 17. The scouts are grouped into patrols. Each patrol picks a name, elects a leader, and plans its part of the meeting. Older scouts teach younger ones.

The adults, led by Scoutmaster George Krawczyk, set the boundaries and keep everyone safe. They don't run every activity. The scouts do. That's where the leadership comes from.

People still say "Boy Scouts." The program's name is Scouts BSA, and the organization has been called Scouting America since 2025.

Scouts and adult leaders sit on benches under a wooden pavilion, facing a camp chapel.

What happens on the first visit?

Come to any Tuesday meeting, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, in the cafeteria at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Davie. It's free, and you don't need to call first.

Directions to the cafeteria
  1. 1 Arrive by 7:00 PM. The directions link goes straight to the cafeteria building. Everyday clothes are fine. No uniform, handbook, or forms yet.
  2. 2 Ask for the Scoutmaster. George Krawczyk will say hello and answer your questions.
  3. 3 Stay and watch. Parents are welcome for the whole meeting: the opening, patrol time, and the closing.
  4. 4 Decide later. Nobody signs up on the first night. Come back as many times as you like.

How are scouts kept safe?

Every adult leader in Troop 183 has completed Scouting America's Youth Protection training. At least two registered adult leaders are present at every activity, and no adult is ever alone with a scout.

Ask us anything

Bring your questions about leaders, campouts, or safety rules on the night you visit. A good troop is happy to answer them.

How much time and money does it take?

Time

One weeknight: Tuesday, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Campouts and summer camp are extra, and families see the calendar in Scoutbook.

Cost

Visiting is always free. Once he joins, the yearly Scouting America registration is about $140, plus troop dues and camping fees. George Krawczyk is happy to walk you through it.

Uniform

The tan uniform shirt comes after he joins, and the troop will tell you what to get. He doesn't need it to visit.

How does a scout become an Eagle Scout?

Seven ranks, each earned by doing, not by sitting in a classroom. 83 Troop 183 scouts have made it all the way.

  1. Rank 1

    Scout

The starting point. Learn the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, and how a patrol works.

  2. Rank 2

    Tenderfoot

Camping basics, first knots, and looking after yourself outdoors.

  3. Rank 3

    Second Class

More trail skills: navigation, cooking, and staying safe on the water.

  4. Rank 4

    First Class

A scout who can take care of himself and help run a campout.

  5. Rank 5

    Star

Service hours, a leadership role, and merit badges he chooses.

  6. Rank 6

    Life

More service, more leadership, and more scouts looking up to him.

  7. Rank 7

    Eagle

A community service project he plans and leads, then a board of review.
