FAQ

Before you drive over.

Short answers to what families ask most. If your question isn't here, ask it on Tuesday. Talking with the Scoutmaster is faster than any form.

When and where does the troop meet?

Every Tuesday from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the cafeteria at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Davie, Florida. You don't need a reservation for a first visit.

What ages can join?

Troop 183 is a Scouts BSA troop for boys 11 to 17. A boy can also join at 10 if he has finished fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light.

Does he need a uniform to visit?

No. Come in everyday clothes the first night. The tan uniform shirt comes after he joins, and the troop will tell you what to get.

What does it cost?

Visiting is always free. Once a boy joins, the yearly Scouting America registration is about $140, plus troop dues and camping fees. Scoutmaster George Krawczyk is happy to walk you through it on a Tuesday.

Can parents stay for the meeting?

Yes. Stay for the whole first meeting, meet Scoutmaster George Krawczyk, and watch the scouts run it. Nobody signs up on the first night.

How are scouts kept safe?

Every adult leader in Troop 183 has completed Scouting America's Youth Protection training. At least two registered adult leaders are present at every activity, and no adult is ever alone with a scout.

Does he need to have been a Cub Scout?

No. Plenty of scouts start in a troop without ever being Cub Scouts. Webelos and Arrow of Light scouts who are crossing over are welcome too.

Is Troop 183 still the Boy Scouts?

Yes. The program once called Boy Scouts is now Scouts BSA, and the national organization has been named Scouting America since 2025. Troop 183 is a troop for boys.

Does my son have to be Catholic?

No. St. Bonaventure Catholic Church charters the troop, and scouts of every faith are welcome.

Which towns do scouts come from?

The troop meets in Davie. Families also come from Weston, Cooper City, Southwest Ranches, Sunrise, and Plantation.

How long does it take to become an Eagle Scout?

It depends on the scout. Eagle is the seventh rank and must be finished before his 18th birthday. Most scouts who earn it take several years. Troop 183 has had 83 Eagle Scouts since 2001.

Where are campouts listed?

In Scoutbook, for current families. This public site lists only the Tuesday meeting, so trip details aren't posted on the open web.

Who is the Scoutmaster?

George Krawczyk, the troop's fourth Scoutmaster since it began in 2001. He has led the troop since 2021.
